The Caper Cars Are Coming! YOU’VE seen those colourful old cars go by. The pre-1980 models, with horns on the bonnet or the rocket on the roof. “Gee, that looks fun,” you’ve said to yourself, “I’d like to have a go at that.” “We hear this comment all the time,” said Max Stahl, organiser of the CAMP QUALITY CAPER, the fun-drive that raises lots of money for Australian kids with cancer. ‘The fact is,” he said, “anyone can have a go. And they do, coming from all walks of life to such an extent that in the past ten years they’ve raised over $2.5-million for Camp Quality.” On Sunday, 20th October, 50 colourful Caper cars will leave Toronto, on Lake Macquarie, on a seven-day driving adventure over back roads and forest tracks. First up they’ll visit Maitland, Gloucester and Wingham, en route to Port Macquarie, their home base for the next three nights while they venture out to the mountain villages of Comboyne, Mt Seaview and Bellangry. Fun-filled fancy dress parties and a visit to Wauchope’s famous Timbertown follow before they hit the road again to Wollomombi, Glen Innes and Tenterfield. More mountain challenges lie ahead to Kyogle and Murwillumbah, before they reach the sparkling seaside at Kingscliff and turn south through Mullumbimby and Byron Bay to Lismore. The resort town of Yamba is next, then a hillclimb on Grafton’s demanding Mountainview course before the final driving adventure through Dorrigo and Bellingen to the finish line at Nambucca Heads. Caper entrants, or “Caperites” as they are known, come from every walk of life and from all age groups, from youngsters to retirees. “They all want to get in and have a go,” Max said. “More and more all lady crews are entering, too. They’re not racing against the clock in the heat and dust – and they like the comfort of overnight stays in cabins or motels!” The Caper can be a test of driving ability, but mostly it’s just fun. And more of it comes from visiting schools in the many large and small towns. “The Caper’s all about fun and adventure, seeing Australia and meeting nice people – and in the end you’re helping kids with cancer,” Max concluded.
